Essentially, the RAM will just work as normal RAM even though you paid for ECC. Registered ECC (or Buffered RAM) is completely different and won't work at all (it won't even POST) on a CPU/motherboard that does not support Reg. ECC memory. In other words, I doubt the fact that the RAM was ECC-capable was why it stopped working after three weeks.

So if a memory module has an odd number of chips, it is parity RAM. Many motherboards support both ECC and non-ECC memory.
