Dec 14, 2015 · While strictly not SCCM related, I would like to know how to enable 8.3 short file name support to Windows 7 (both x86 and x64). I am aware of the commands like fsutil.exe behavior set disable8dot3 0 and registry keys like NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation, however these will only give short names to files & directories created after the command is run and then rebooted.

While the default for new volumes is to disable short names, the default system wide setting is to let you control 8.3 naming for each volume individually. Dec 30, 2018 · My first learning of/problems with the LFN/Long File Names thingy with earlier versions of Windows [not Win3.xxx running on top of DOS] was that the HDD File Allocation Table stores 2 names for each file, the 8.3 and the LFN. The down side was a reduction of the number of files allowed in the root of a drive.

Then the value with the ~ is your short filename. If your filename is short to begin with, then you won't find a string containing a ~.
