May 09, 2007 · However, I am not knowledgable enough about AAC to know if this is normal or shows a bug in libaac/mencoder. On the other hand "audio(0x706d)" is definetly the tag of aac/faad and *not* undf. BTW, playing around with encoding options didn't change anything (e.g. switching between mpeg level 2 or 4).

Unfortunately, as MEncoder was not designed from the beginning to support container formats other than AVI, your should really be paranoid about the resulting file. Please check to be sure that the audio/video synchronization is OK and that the file can be played correctly by players other than MPlayer.

Feb 02, 2014 · AAC is a Variable Bit-Rate audio format. Even though the AVI container does support VBR audio, the Mencoder authors still live in the VfW-compatibility era. As for the issue with the MP4 container, I'm unable to explain that. Try re-encoding only the video with mencoder, then remux with the original audio through mp4creator or mp4box.

Mencoder does not come with a graphical interface, and therefore some users may also want to use a graphical frontend. Features include: Wide support for Video and audio codecs: Video: MPEG-1 (VCD) and MPEG-2 (SVCD/DVD/DVB) video. MPEG-4 ASP in all variants including DivX ;-), OpenDivX (DivX4), DivX 5 (Pro), Xvid. QuickTime 7 supports H.264 video and AAC audio, but it does not support them muxed in the AVI container format. However, you can use MEncoder to encode the video and audio, and then use an external program such as mp4creator (part of the MPEG4IP suite) to remux the video and audio tracks into an MP4 container.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Audio_Coding
Advanced Audio Coding is designed to be the successor of the MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, known as MP3 format, which was specified by ISO/IEC in 11172-3 (MPEG-1 Audio) and 13818-3 (MPEG-2 Audio). Blind tests in the late 1990s showed that AAC demonstrated greater sound quality and transparency than MP3 for files coded at the same bit rate.

For the best quality, use the libfdk_aac encoder. Unfortunately the license of libfdk_aac is incompatible with the GPL, which means that the GPL does not permit distribution of an executable derived from both libx264 (GPL) (used for H.264 video encoding) and libfdk_aac (used for AAC audio encoding).
