Oct 11, 2005 · AIX runs on POWER cpus. VMWare is providing virtual machines on x86 architecture, so the answer is NO. POWER5 does however have it's own virtualization technology in hardware where you can have virtual machines running linux or aix (you need a HMC console to be able to use it).

Hello: I have AIX installed on an old computer which we still use. For this reason I'd like to virtualize it if at all possible. If not, what other options do I have to create a clone of the disk or to move the OS and the programs to a SUN server that we have but do not use?

Aug 30, 2017 · AIX does not run on Intel x86/x64 chips so it would not be possible to create a VMware virtual machine with AIX as the guest OS. The release notes that you refer to is about vCenter Configuration Manager (VCM) and it does not refer to creating VMs but merely being able to manage AIX machines from VCM.

Only very old versions of Aix (I think version 2.0) had a version that could run on x86 platforms and the x86 supported models were MCA machines (no PCI support), so even if you could get hold of such an old version, you would probably not be able to run it under VMware.
