@justyn: given that Ardour on OS X does, in fact, support the use of MP3 files as part of the editing & mixing workflow, I don't think its much of a barrier. In fact, the existence of this article is probably now a bigger issue than anything technical.

How can I teach Ardour to let me import mp3s? It doens’t bother me a lot though … having to convert sounds might make me choose better. But how can I even play mp3s while running Ardour through Jack? Ardour supports all common audio file formats, including WAV, AIFF, AIFC, CAF, W64 and BWF, with all typical sample formats (8-, 16-, 24-, 32-bit integer, floating point, and more). A full list of libsndfile's supported formats is available on the libsndfile website. For MIDI import, Ardour will read any Standard MIDI Format (SMF) file.

Among other things, some significant optimizations were made to redraw performance on OS X/macOS that may be apparent if you are using Ardour on that platform.

Ardour specific issues. Ardour supports a wide variety of video file formats codecs. More specifically, Ardour itself actually does not support any video at all but delegates handling of video files to ffmpeg, which supports over 350 different video codecs and more than 250 file formats.

Now as we approach 2020, and in the same week as Firefox 71 adding native MP3 playback support, Ardour now allows MP3 files to be imported into the workstation.
