I am trying to run some games on Steam (specifically Dota 2 Reborn) on a Windows 7 64 bit guest under VirtualBox running on a Fedora Linux 23 64 bit host. I have enabled 2D and 3D acceleration on the machine settings and I have installed the guest additions with support for Direct 3D (I unchecked the "stable", basic version).

The OpenGL drivers in the VirtualBox Guest Additions are limited to OpenGL 2.1. Despite many requests for improved OpenGL capability in the VBox user forums I've seen no mention of the VBox developers working on OpenGL 3 or better support. That said it only had OpenGL 2.0 support around 2009 and has been quietly upgrading to OpenGL 2.1 in the meantime.

And when the virtual machine has to virtualize the graphics system to provide latest OpenGL and Direct3D support this is just insane (even if, thanks to guest additions, a guest OS has more access to the graphics hardware)!
