Aug 30, 2008 · The pelvic support osteotomy as described by Ilizarov provided a solution through a second, more distal, osteotomy. The significance of this additional osteotomy was to enable a proximal valgus osteotomy large enough to eradicate any degree of adduction in the hip (and thereby eliminate the Trendelenburg gait) but, through the distal varus osteotomy, achieve parallelism of both legs.Cited by: 18

Mar 01, 2011 · Pelvic support osteotomy (PSO) evolved to solve problems associated with hip instability by supporting the pelvis on the upper end of osteotomized femur [3, 6]. Bouvier, in 1838, first performed subtrochanteric osteotomy aiming at pelvic support, in congenital dislocation of the hip .Cited by: 12

Patients with an unstable hip secondary to any aetiology usually have loss of bone from the proximal femur or shortening of the limb or both. In this study we report our results in the treatment of...

The literature has shown that pelvic support osteotomy procedure is very helpful in removing Trendelenburg’s gait. Arthrodesis is the only other method to eliminate this problem, but a large range of motion is lost in this method. In hip reconstruction osteotomy, acceptable and painless range of motion is preserved.Cited by: 2

The first description of the “Pelvic Support Osteotomy” comes from Lance 1936. He described a sub trochanteric femur osteotomy in the surgical treatment of chronically dislocated hips. Ilizarov proposed additionally a varus osteotomy of the distal femur. This allowed a strong abduction osteotomy of the hip and thus less Trendelenburg gait.Cited by: 1

This study shows that pelvic support osteotomy using the new hybrid external fixator, which combines the versatility and modularity of the Ilizarov frame with the compactness of the monolateral fixator, is a useful treatment modality in individuals with unstable hips. The pelvic support osteotomy (PSO) is a hip bypass procedure where the upper femur is bent at an angle that stabilizes the connection between the femur and pelvis to allow walking with less limp. The pelvic support osteotomy is a very old procedure that was revamped by Ilizarov, whose principles are followed with the type of PSO used by Dr. Paley since 1988.

We present a new technique of the Ilizarov hip reconstruction with internal systems exclusively. A locking compression plate is applied to fix the proximal valgus-extension osteotomy and a motorised intramedullary distraction nail (Fitbone ®) is used for the distal, lengthening–varisation osteotomy.Cited by: 6
