Apr 17, 2015 · Notepad++ supports UCS-2, which is like UTF-16 but does not support characters outside plane 0 (BMP or basic multilingual plane), that is characters with code points above FFFF (requires a pair of 16bit codes in UTF-16).

Jan 07, 2018 · UTF-16 and UCS-2 are more or less the same thing, so you are good on that part. The LE means Little Endian, and you will get LE on Windows, since Wintel is a Little Endian architecture. But if you are exporting to another platform, that platform may expect BE. To confuse matter, when then rest of the world say only UTF-16, they typically mean BE.

In Notepad, as in Windows software in general, “Unicode” as an encoding name means UTF-16 Little Endian (UTF-16LE). (I first thought it’s not real UTF-16, because Notepad++ recognizes it as UCS-2 and shows the content as garbage, but re-checking with BabelPad, I concluded that Notepad can encode even non-BMP characters correctly.)

May 03, 2010 · Notepad tells you the extended characters will be lost if you confirm the save operation. At least that last message offers the possibility to backup and "Save as" to choose UTF-8, but 1) this is very cumbersome, and 2) files with no extended characters will still be saved in ANSI by default.
