I have a newly built quality machine. It boots many different distros but won't do Ubuntu 16.04. I get the 'black screen'. I edited the boot options to eliminate all options EXCEPT ro and added nomodeset. (At a minimum, eliminate splash.) Now it boots fine. But I do see the "no UMS support in Radeon module warning" in my boot log.

May 01, 2019 · "[drm:radeon_init [radeon]] *ERROR* No UMS support in radeon module!" I tried selecting the rescue kernel at the boot up screen, but that doesn't work. Both the normal kernel and the rescue one boot to a GUI which is all garbled and messed up. I've tried modify the GRUB parameters by deleting the, "nomodeset" option, but that doesn't work.

I had a similar issue, in my case the reason was the nomodeset kernel parameter passed by GRUB2. I just removed it from the GRUB2 config and everything works well since then. I suppose that in your case, by analogy, the problem is with radeon.modeset=0 rd.driver.blacklist=radeon at the end of your kernel command line. Depending on how well you feel with GRUB configuration you can try to fix it ...

Feb 22, 2015 · similar problem using clonzilla live 20141208 AMD 64 version loaded onto a usb thumb drive. I get to the bootmenu by either booting from USB or USB UEFI but regardless of which resolution i choose, it complains that there is no UMS support in the radeon, No cache mode, hid-generic usb_submit_usb(ctrl) fails -1 and modprobe vesafb not found.
