@timelessbeing, of course you don't need to do reinstallation. Even if something goes wrong, you can reenable IDE mode again. But the linux kernel, which is responsible for AHCI support, is perfect enough to prevent such situation to happen. – Danatela Jul 3 '13 at 5:23

AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) is the native work mode for SATA drives. AHCI has two main benefits: support for hot pluggable SATA drives (mimicking USB drives' behavior) and Native Command Queuing (NCQ).
