The failure (switchroot: mount failed) will be when it tries to switch from the initrd image to the real file system. The problem here is PATA block devices are built into the kernel but the SCSI and SATA block device modules are not. They are supposed to be loaded by modules from the initrd image.

May 31, 2018 · If you are going to use your SSDs in your VM you will want to connect them to this controller and pass it through to the VM. To do that I would recommend "stub"ing the device in "syslinux.cfg" (you do that from the GUI on the unRAID flash drive).

I've cloned a Linux (Fedora) server system from an IDE drive to a SATA drive but it doesn't boot, failing at switch root. I've done a clean install on the target drive and have learned thru inspection of the initrd files that when installing fedora on a SATA drive it includes the ahci module, which was not used when I had no SATA drives during the installation of my working system.
