According to W3Schools' Browser Stats, about 98.2% of browsers are IE 7+, FF, Chrome or Opera, which all support PNG format with transparency. So, not quite 99.9%, but pretty close. The stats say about 0.6% of uses have IE6, which suppports PNG without transparency (transparent PNGs in IE6 just have a solid white background).

I do not believe IE6 supports in-line data for the <img/> tag. However, you might want to try another format like GIF or JPG. EDIT Given the fact that it took IE forever to accurately support PNG (still debatable) one could easily deduce that PNG might not be supported as an in-line data format for <img/> tags. Jul 15, 2015 · I cannot view .png pages in Internet Explorer. I think this problem ends up sounding sort of weird when other people, or I write it out. It's hard to explain what exactly the problem is. People who answer the question think that we want to change the PNG file associations to Windows Explorer or something. This probably depends on how the de-association is done (many applications have options to do this, which do not seem to work consistently). The only sure way to restore the correct behavior seems to be the complete removal and recreation of the file type 'PNG Image' (in this way it is automatically associated to "windows picture and fax viewer").
