Secondly, AlphaImageLoader does not magically add full PNG transparency support so that a PNG in the page will just start working. Instead, when applied to an element in the page, it draws a new rendering surface in the same space that element occupies and loads a PNG into it. This isn't exactly a fix, but a handy workaround I'm using from time to time to support transparency on IE6 without any extra code at all. It won't always fit the bill, but pretty often it does. The idea is that most of the time you will need to show your PNGs on a fixed color background anyway.

PNG also supports binary transparency, as well as full Alpha, meaning that each pixel of the image can also have one of 256 different levels of transparency (or 65 thousand levels if you really want to). Aug 14, 2006 · IE does not support 24-bit alpha transparency on png images, only binary transparency the same as a gif image uses. IE 7 is supposed to offer this support (finally) but if this is the source of your troubles, then that's no help to you now.

Apr 06, 2009 · Basically, you're using something IE6 was not designed to handle. It does not support png alpha transparency. Google "IE6 png" and you'll find explanations and possible workarounds. ...Or, just let IE6 users see what IE6 shows.

Feb 28, 2011 · PNG pretty much obsoletes GIF in nearly all cases except for animation (although it still have a little bit of browser support problem, IE6 doesn't support PNG's alpha transparency although regular GIF-like transparency is no problem). PNG is lossless format which means color information is fully intact. GIF is nowadays only useful for animation.
