More recent processor architectures are compatible with EVC. The maximum EVC mode that can be supported by a particular processor is listed in the VMware Compatibility Guide for that processor. To use EVC, you must run ESX 3.5 Update 2 or higher with VirtualCenter 2.5 Update 2 or higher and have compatible processors in your servers.

EVC masks only those processor features that affect vMotion compatibility. Enabling EVC does not prevent a virtual machine from taking advantage of faster processor speeds, increased numbers of CPU cores, or hardware virtualization support that might be available on newer hosts. EVC cannot prevent virtual machines from accessing hidden CPU ...

Apr 25, 2013 · Would anyone be able to tell me if say a E3-1230v3 and a Core i3-3220 would be able to be in a VMWare Cluster and support vMotion? It appears one falls under Hasswell and the other IvyBridge. Currently running ESXi 6 and cannot enable EVC mode with the current setup. Please keep in mind this is non-production, test lab scenario only.

CPU Compatibility Scenarios vCenter Server 's CPU compatibility checks compare the CPU features available on the source host, the subset of features that the virtual machine can access, and the features available on the target host. Without the use of EVC, any mismatch between two hosts' user-level features blocks migration, whether or not the virtual machine itself has access to those features.

This can cause problems in enabling EVC, because the EVC compatibility checks detect the absence of features that are expected to be present for a particular CPU. If you cannot enable EVC on a system with a compatible processor, ensure that all features are enabled in the BIOS.
