You can use the Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) feature to help ensure vMotion compatibility for the hosts in a cluster. EVC ensures that all hosts in a cluster present the same CPU feature set to virtual machines, even if the actual CPUs on the hosts differ. Using EVC prevents migrations with vMotion from failing because of incompatible CPUs.

The maximum EVC mode that can be supported by a particular processor is listed in the VMware Compatibility Guide for that processor. Apr 25, 2013 · Would anyone be able to tell me if say a E3-1230v3 and a Core i3-3220 would be able to be in a VMWare Cluster and support vMotion? It appears one falls under Hasswell and the other IvyBridge. Currently running ESXi 6 and cannot enable EVC mode with the current setup. Please keep in mind this is non-production, test lab scenario only.
