Apr 12, 2017 · HP P410, P420, P8xx. They are SAS controllers but support SATA disks, make sure your case can accommodate the P8xx series if you go this route. Though given this is a lab, using the single disks as they are would not be an issue, just don't throw heavy IO at them and you'll be fine, just bare with things - this will cost you nothing as you have all you need in front of you.

Jul 22, 2013 · The Adaptec RAID 6405E on Newegg is listed as compatible with VMware ESX. This compatibility listing threw me as I had been avoiding any controller that listed OS compatibility as being software RAID. I think this one is HW RAID. The price seems very reasonable.
