Dec 19, 2012 · ESXi 5.0 will install and run only on servers with 64-bit x86 CPUs.... So you'll need a 64-bit capable server, most modern systems have this. x86_64 is the 64-bit extension of IA_32 (IA_32 is the 32-bit generation of the x86 set.)

Another way to check your host servers' CPUs is to use the utility VMware CPU Host Info. The utility can run on any workstation, connect a vCenter Server (though not on individual ESX hosts) and report on each host's CPU capabilities.
