Feb 26, 2012 · The 80GB with backwards compatibility is interesting as it does not include all of the PS2 hardware, but only the GPU, which is why it can't play as many PS2 games as the original 20GB and 60GB models which included both the CPU (the Emotion Engine) and the GPU (Graphics Synthesizer).

Yes the original PS3 runs PS2 games pretty much perfectly because there's a complete PS2 on the motherboard,the components that allowed for very good PS1 compatibility on the FAT PS2 are not present in the chips that are on the PS3 motherboard because the PS2 chips on the OG PS3 are taken from the late slim models that relied on pure PS1 emulation too.

Apr 25, 2008 · If you have the 40GB or new 80GB core, it won't play PS2 games because they took the Emotion Engine CPU out the PS3, it was costing too much to put into the system and they were losing money apparently. Check and update your question, does your PS3 have 2 USB ports, if so they you can't. If it has 4 it should play.

In case you've never tried it, playing PS2 games on an HDTV sucks if it's not 480p which most PS2 games were not. When I bought my PS3 I was still playing a lot of PS2 games and it got bothersome switching between my CRT to my HDTV for gaming, so seeing as PS2 games looked better up converted on the PS3 then in 480i on my SDTV I made the switch and traded in my PS2.
