Jul 17, 2019 · But now ZFS On Linux itself has figured out a solution to restore said SIMD support on these recent kernel releases. With this ZoL commit made last week, SIMD compatibility should be working now on recent kernels and thus restoring the better performance. Restore the SIMD optimization for 4.19.38 LTS, 4.14.120 LTS, and 5.0 and newer kernels.

Jan 17, 2019 · Last week I reported on ZFS On Linux breaking with Linux 5.0 due to some kernel symbols sought by this out-of-tree file-system driver no longer being exported and the upstream developers not willing to adjust for the ZoL code. That's still the case but the ZFS On Linux developers have a patch so at least the file-system driver will be able to build on Linux 5.0.

Dec 19, 2018 · With ZFS On Linux (ZOL) being more actively developed than the ZFS file-system code within the OpenSolaris-derived Illumos kernel, FreeBSD will be transitioning their ZFS file-system kernel driver to be based on ZOL. Particularly with Delphix moving their ZFS code to be based upon ZOL rather than the Illumos kernel tree, that ZFS code isn't being maintained as well as ZOL.

Linux kernel creator Linus Torvalds doesn't recommend using ZFS On Linux at least until Oracle were to re-license the code to make it friendly for mainline inclusion. But even then he doesn't seem turned on by the ZFS features or general performance.

Sep 24, 2019 · So for Ubuntu 19.10 next month a ZFS option is expected from the default guided partitioning area while the advanced ZFS partitioning features would need to wait for the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS cycle. At least though the limited exposure in Ubuntu 19.10 should help in vetting their ZFS On Linux support ahead of next year's Long Term Support release.

ZFS On Linux 0.8.3 has the same kernel support of Linux 2.6.32 to Linux 5.4 as the previous ZoL release, but new are a ton of fixes. There are fixes from ZTS issues to various code issues that turned up from cppcheck, various encryption handling improvements, typo fixes, and over one hundred other changes in total for this point release in the ZFS On Linux 0.8 series.
