Nov 09, 2014 · The root of this is Windows XP x86 is MBR only meaning that the limitation is to do with MBR. Disks exceeding 2TB must use GPT which extends the limit significantly, however Windows XP does not have this support currently. A 32 bit version of windows generally will only see the protective MBR on a GPT disk.

Jun 28, 2011 · Support for this is poor as of 2010 due to Windows requiring Extensible Firmware Interface additions to the BIOS to boot using GPT. It should be noted that this is the largest PARTITION. not the largest drive size, it will support the largest size available which is 3TB at this time, but it will not support this in a single partition.

The reason for that is a new standard, called Interrupt 13 extensions, that emerged in the late 1990s and pushed the drive size limit to 9 TB (which hopefully will be sufficient for the next couple of years).

May 24, 2010 · I just purchased a 2 TB hd for one of My computers because the 200 gb one was too small. I am running Ubuntu as well as xp on it. I have partitioned it to a partition size of about 981 GB for the windows xp partition but the system recovery disks that I made when the computer was new will not install the os or anything else.
