You can add two USB controllers to a virtual machine. The xHCI controller, available for Linux guest operating systems only, supports USB 3.0 superspeed, 2.0, and 1.1 devices. The EHCI+UHCI controller supports USB 2.0 and 1.1 devices.

You will probably not see any USB 3.0 devices then, because the necessary xhci driver module is not loaded automatically (at least not on my whitebox that uses an add-on Renesas chip based controller). Go and load the module with the command vmkload_mod xhci in an ESXi shell. After that lsusb should also list your USB 3.0 device(s).

Sep 26, 2012 · Windows VMware ESXi 5.1 has USB 3.0 support, but it's currently limited to using the vSphere Web Client to map client-side USB 3.0 devices to the remote VM. Long story short, turns out ESXi 5.1 doesn't really support USB 3.0 in the way you might think. In other words, if your system running ESXi 5.1 has USB 3.0 ports, that's nice!

Power on the Debian VM again and check lsusb output whether USB 3.0 device works or not. if it does not work still, please upload your fusion vm-support log bundle to us. Oct 19, 2015 · In my latest post USB Devices as VMFS Datastore in vSphere ESXi 6.0 I had a problem with USB 3.0 devices that are detected as USB 2 in ESXi. I know that USB 3.0, also known as eXtensible Host Controller Interface (xHCI), is supported in ESXi 6.0 and ESXi 5.5 Build 2143827 or later. Unfortunately all of my devices are detected as USB 2.1, despite the USB 3 hub was visible.
