The file transfer button can be disabled for 3 reasons: You are connected to a RealVNC Free Edition server, which has no support for FTs at all; You are connected to a TightVNC server 1.2.X, which again doesn't support FTs; You are connected to a TightVNC 1.3 or UltraVNC server, but file transfer is disabled in the server's properties. I'm running TightVNC Version 2.0beta1 on two Windows 7 Professional PCs. It seems that the ability to transfer files between the VNC viewer/server does not appear to work. I did check the settings on the server to allow for file transfers. When I connect using the VNC client, the option is grayed out.

Apr 30, 2006 · When I try to drag and drop a file into the CotVNC, it attempts to do something, but then gives me an error, sometime to the tune of .plist file not found. I just ran into this problem last night and was only able to circumvent the problem using a file transfer service, AIM, MSN, etc, on both computers.

VNC does not have file transfer as a standard protocol feature. It was, however, implemented separately by Tightvnc and others, but those are all separate and incompatible implementations. One third party Linux only vnc server that supports tightvnc and realvnc file transfers is x11vnc but that only works with real displays.
