Apr 22, 2007 · I have a PCMCIA card for wireless 3G internet (dial up, dynamic IP) that works only in Windows, not in Linux. So I would like to be able to use it in XP guest machine since I can not use it in Linux host. Does VMware Workstation support PCMCIA cards at all? Thanks.

Jan 24, 2007 · PCMCIA support. VMWare would be a great benefit to me (and other PLC/HMI programmers) if it had some kind of PCMCIA-passthrough support. I use a proprietary PC card (Allen-Bradley PCMK) on a daily basis. Allen-Bradley owns the PLC market, and this card is used as the primary interface for many of their models.

We are doing something similar with both VMware and open source virtualization software. Sharing of devicenet, profibus type cards is difficult since appropriate drivers have not been written yet. Assigning the PCI devices directly to a VM (without sharing) might be easier if the PCI cards support function level reset, and MSI/MSI-x.

When you are using the PC Card adapter, launch your virtual machine using pcmcia.vmx. When you are using the adapter in the docking station, use nic.vmx. Both.vmx files are for the same virtual machine. When you choose one, you are just choosing which network adapter to use.
