Most X servers are designed to allow software applications to select from a wide variety of X Visual Classes, with the notable exception of XFree86, the default Linux X server. #4557 (8-bit pseudocolor visuals not available in Solaris ...

    https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/4557
There appears to be no way to get support for 8-bit pseudocolor (overlay) visuals in a 24-bit default setup for Solaris 10 guests. Such support is essential for older graphic applications. I need to run Xnest in 8-bit mode for an application, so I need support for both 24-bit and 8-bit visuals. Altering xorg.conf does not seem to help.

(In reply to comment #12) > couldn't we argue that cairo and gtk/gdk/pango developers could have at least > tested 8-bit pseudo color and bgr/rgb true-color visuals on Xvnc or Xnest? Certainly, getting access to an X server with an 8-bit pseudo-color visual is not the problem. So, you're correct that an offer of hardware won't help get the problem fixed.

Oct 28, 2009 · This is not the same as actually creating a pseudocolor visual - an xdpyinfo with my 7600GT shows that pseudocolor is not one of the visuals that is supported in 24 bit mode. On a Sun Blade (sparc) with a XVR-500 card, running Xnest in 8-bit pseudocolor mode is no problem at all in an otherwise 24-bit environment. This is a very different story.

Subject: EXT :Re: [Simh] 8-bit pseudocolor on modern Windows PC? It is part of the OpenVMS distribution at least through VAX and AXP V7.3. It should be part of the hobbyist program. It is a retired and unsupported product. HP never made any changes to it at least through V7.2. I seem to remember that V7.3 was under development but never completed.
