Under "authentication method" in my Thunderbird settings are these choices: Normal Password, Encrypted Password, and two others I don't understand.

We don't change anything in IIS7 and it's works as always. Actual results: Received message: Sending of the message failed. When sending an email I get the following: Sending of message failed. The SMTP server smtp-server.cfl.rr.com does not seem to support encrypted passwords. If you just set up the account, please try changing to 'Password, transmitted insecurely' as the 'Authentication method' in the 'Account Settings Server settings'.
