https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monitor_mode
Monitor mode, or RFMON (Radio Frequency MONitor) mode, allows a computer with a wireless network interface controller (WNIC) to monitor all traffic received on a wireless channel. Unlike promiscuous mode, which is also used for packet sniffing, monitor mode allows packets to be captured without having to associate with an access point or ad hoc network first.

Short for Radio Frequency Monitoring, RFMON is a passive method of WLAN discovery. It is a sniffing mode which allows the card to report drivers from the 802.11 layer. A client with a wireless card that is configured in RFMON mode will be able to capture all RF signals on the channels to which it is configured to listen. RFMON is a receive-only mode.

All modern wireless cards chipsets would may have that feature to be able to sniff/monitor, but as Matthew Read pointed out in the comments below, its a grey area in terms of driver support. When you issue the binary command ifconfig there's a ' promisc ' switch to tell it to go into promiscuous mode to enable monitoring/sniffing.

But it still doesn't support capturing all 802.11 native packets (like control and management frames are not captured). I noticed there is a way setting DOT11_OPERATION_MODE_NETWORK_MONITOR for the wireless adapter using WlanSetInterface function. But this call succeeds (the return value is OK, and my wi-fi network disconnects after this call).
