Can I move the support posts in my basement? I have a home that is about 30 feet by 60 feet with a full unfinished basement. It has running the length a beam that is 3 – 2×10’s. I was wondering what the spacing of the support post could or should be. What is there now varies from 6′-4″ to 7′-10″.

Jul 10, 2015 · Even when there is an I-beam running across the basement to catch the load coming down from above, the support column is where it is for a reason. A support column should only be moved if an architect or engineer looks at the situation and provides a design for the project. And fair warning, even if it can be moved, it's usually not very easy.
