Dec 17, 2005 · The STK500 seems to have 20 pin sockets, but then the STK505 is listed for 20 pin devices... Also, why are some socket sizes duplicated on the STK505? I'm buying an STK500 and wanted to pick up a selection of AVRs to play with, but then I found it doesn't support all DIP sizes. Thanks.---Bill Tuttle

Running a ISP frequency at 1/5 or less than target clock is recommended on Atmel STK500. The ISP frequency is set by the board tab of the STK500 user interface. High-Voltage programming can also program devices that are not supported by ISP programming.

Atmel Studio will automatically detect any old Atmel STK500 firmware version and request the user to upgrade the firmware. If for some reason the upgrade fails (the serial cable is detached during upgrade, the power goes out, ...) the next time the Atmel Studio tries to connect to the STK500, the board will not be detected and the automatic upgrade procedure will not start.
