If by "Running on VirtualBox", you mean that you are running Ubuntu on VirtualBox, be aware that VirtualBox has a slightly less then stellar performance record regarding graphics acceleration, and as such this could be considered a problem with VB, not Ubuntu.

The solution for me was to fully exit steam, then open terminal and enter: $ force_s3tc_enable=true steam This would then allow me to launch games from steam, the terminal stays open in the background but i dont mind that as long as i can play No More Room in Hell!
