Hello, I am setting up a new server with Windows Server 2003 x64 bits and SQL Server 2005 x64 bits. Under 32 bits of Windows we normally use /3GB and enable AWE under SQL Server (both SQL 2000 and SQL 2005) and allocate 6 GB of fixed memory to SQL Server.

Sep 21, 2010 · SQL Server 32 bit can't use more than 4GB of memory. Please use AWE setting for the 32-bit SQL Server and Lock Pages in Memory setting if it is a dedicated box for the SQL Server.

Once you have enabled OS support for > 4GB, you can enable AWE and give SQL access to the additional memory. The OS limit is due purely to licensing and is not actually a physical limitation. Windows Server variants illustrate this with it being common for their Server Datacenter editions able to use 64GB in x86.
