This does not work for me. Even after aptitude reinstall sox I still get a SoX was compiled without MP3 encoding support when I try to run sox afterwards. (Though admittedly I'm still running Lucid, this might work better on a more modern Ubuntu.) – zrajm Oct 23 '13 at 8:06

Because of patent reasons precompiled SoX versions do not support mp3 processing and needs to be self-compiled with lame and mad codec. Feb 21, 2017 · I'm currently using SOX to MP3 encode raw PCM audio. I normally use AAC, but my version of Sox doesn't have AAC support. The MP3's being produced have lots of clicks and popping noises. An example MP3 is attached. 1. Could I expect AAC encoding to produce a cleaner audio file? 2.
