The whole point of Steam Cloud is to store your saves in case you want to play on a different computer. But because synchronisation was on by default, and I didn't even know of Steam Cloud's existence, I didn't turn it off, so it kept uploading saves until it was full.

Because of the automated nature of cloud synchronization, Steam Support has a limited ability to address issues with the cloud. If any saves or other data have been lost, it is not likely that we will be able to recover them.

Jan 20, 2013 · Steam's Cloud save is laughably limited as well. If you open Skyrim's properties and go to the Updates tab, you'll see that you only have 100MB of space. Given the size of Skyrim's save files, that's around 20 saves at most, maybe six or seven "advanced" save files (which hover around 15MB in size), minus the four that autosaves and quicksaves will hog up.

This has been a problem for a while for me now, I start Skyrim, and after saying "launching the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" for a few seconds, it comes up with a warning saying "Skyrim won't sync with the Steam cloud" and I can't use old saved games, or any of my mods.

In the sidebar in a game's store page you can find this kind of information about what Steam features a game supports. Not all games support Steam Cloud. If you are worried about these games' save files, you could use a tool that finds all game save files and make a backup of them for you. It's called GameSave Manager
