Jun 16, 2011 · For what it's worth, the ICH10R does support port multipliers - in Linux. I have a Thermaltake BlacX Duet connected to a SATA port on my Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3L motherboard, and both disks are recognized when I boot from a USB key drive in Linux (SLAX 6.1.2).

So, while it does require a fairly recent kernel to support, and there are still some small issues, it looks like SATA port multipliers are a good way to connect a backplane or external enclosure to a controller.
