RETS servers allow to specify an offset, effectively removing first few records from the download. That allows the client to ask for additional data if their first request was limited to a number of records lower than what the client needs.

Relies on RETS Status Field.)"... though according to this posting, "offset" support if NOT supported, will still import listing--however the number of listings will differ from that if "offset" was supported...

The RETS server limits results to 5000 rows per query. Queries with result sets larger than 5000 rows can be accomplished using offset. Offset=1 must be included in the first query then Offset is incremented based on the row limits e.g. Offset=1 for the first query, Offset=5001 for the second query, Offset=10001 and so on.
