Apr 05, 2014 · The polyfill will test any browser for REM support and patch it up if needed, although we all know IE8 and below is where the issue lies. Once lack of support is determined, it reads all the link tags for stylesheets and finds selectors that have rules using the REM unit.

Unfortunately REM doesn't support IE in Compatibility mode. The REM IE plugin only supports IE 11, putting IE 11 in compatibility view effectively downgrades IE to an unsupported version. The advantage of "rem" over "px" seems to be that "rem" will be relative to the a size set with "%" on the body, and this allows to change all text sizes in one line for a specific breakpoint. Default text size change IS seemingly an issue, since "px" and "rem" text remains unchanged.

Mar 22, 2013 · In effect, rem is a document-wide CSS variable. Browser support for rem is quite good these days. It’s limited on desktop because IE8 does not support it, but common mobile and tablet browsers handle it much better. Rem can be used for its typical font sizing duty.

What do we do for browsers that don't support rem units? We can specify the fall-back using px, if you don't mind users of older versions of Internet Explorer still being unable to resize the text (well, there's still page zoom in IE7 and IE8). To do so, we specify the font-size using px units first and then define it again using rem units.
