gnome-terminal can't set 256 color support correctly with or without tmux. I've been trying to set up 256 color support correctly for quite some time but it seems to never work for me so I'm not even remotely sure what I'm doing wrong.

Since gnome-terminal 3.16 introduced official support for 256 colors in the terminal I figured I'd jump into the present and actually change up my colorscheme for once. However, I'm getting really inconsistent results that are confusing me: I can't really figure out what's wrong or where to start to fix it.

Jul 02, 2017 · Windows Command Prompt does not support 256 colors 😢 You will need to use a different terminal, like Git For Windows or Msys2 to get 256 color support, and then point hyper.js to their respective executable.

Gnome Terminal does support 256 colour mode, but doesn't always sets the TERM variable to xterm, rather than xterm-256color. There's no way to override this directly, but you can work around it by setting: ... you need to recompile screen with 256-color support.
