FRED is designed to provide decision support for TOC operators in a simulated intelligent vehicle‐highway system operating environment. Based on traffic information from detectors on freeways and from an incident report database, FRED is able to detect and verify multiple incidents that occur on a freeway network, and give advice to TOC operators regarding incident response strategies.

Traffic surveillance systems use detectors and video equipment to support the most advanced freeway management systems. Surveillance technology, either in-ground or overhead, is used to provide real-time traffic data that is communicated to TMCs to assist agencies with decision making support to improve freeway operations.

Jul 12, 2002 · At a fundamental level, the hope has always been that our information and decision support systems will help decision makers monitor events, and evaluate, choose and act on alternatives as events actually unfold. An email from Neil Raden in late October prompted this Ask Dan! and my investigation of "real-time" decision support.

This process could potentially be automated by an intelligent system. This paper presents such a system called freeway real‐time expert‐system demonstration (FRED). FRED is designed to provide decision support for TOC operators in a simulated intelligent vehicle‐highway system operating environment.

For a traffic management system (TMS) to improve traffic flow, TMS operators must develop effective routing strategies based on the data collected by the system. The purpose ofthis research was to build prototype decision support systems (DSS) for the real-timedevelopment ofsuch strategies. We used the freeway system controlled bythe

ICMS is a "system of systems," i.e., a transportation management system (TMS) that connects the individual network-based TMS, provides decision support, and enables joint operations according to a set of operational procedures agreed to by the network owners. ICMS facilitates ICM programs to meet corridor needs and realize the ICM vision.
