Dec 30, 2012 · What is the size limit of a NTFS RAM disk? I can make small disks, but big ones fail. This computer is Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit, 32 GB of RAM and a 6 core Intel Processor. There is over 27 GB of free RAM and I fail attempting to make a RAM disk half that size. mike

NTFS and exFAT are more modern and can be used for disks and files of any size. Generally, NTFS is more advanced as it supports file compression, symbolic links, quotas and transacted operations. On the other hand, exFAT is more lightweight, and since it doesn't have the NTFS overhead, it has 10-20% better performance a RAM disk.

But how to format the drive with ntfs filesystem. Is it that ntfs boot sector has to be written like FAT. Or else is there any other way to convert Fat file system to NTFS file system? I tried with different disk IOCTLS to change the partition type and drive layout but i couldn't. Please direct me how to format a ramdisk with ntfs.

Now we remove this exist ramdisk and add a new ramdisk of the same size WITH Dynamic RAM Allocation enabled. Check the available physical memory again, and it is about 2.8GB! Only about 200MB RAM is allocated for this ramdisk of 2GB. (This 200MB RAM is used to build initial NTFS file system.)

I am in need of operating system (which probably will be Linux) either bootable from USB or safely integrated with Windows boot system. Feb 27, 2017 · If you mean creating a drive letter to a ramdisk and then a folder that redirect to the drive letter, you should check the "mklink" command. I know nothing about powershell, but you can directly create a ramdisk in a folder. Instead of using "-m R:", use for instance "-m C:\MyFolder". C:\MyFolder must be an empty directory located in a NTFS volume.
