Because of new operating system support, Oracle 10g Release 1 or later can make use of processor memory addressing resources for more efficient page usage. When large page support is enabled, the Oracle Database buffers will be more quickly accessible by the CPU.

Background. Large pages on Windows was implemented in Oracle 10g release 1. To put it simply, the idea behind it is to allocate larger chunks of memory for the buffer cache so there is lower overhead when the CPUs are accessing large amounts of memory, resulting in the RAM being accessed more quickly.

Nwalter Notes in comments below that in at least some windows versions, the registry key ORA_LPSIZE can be used to set the size of the large page granule. There is a large caveat for largepages on windows. When starting the Oracle instance using hugepages, all of the hugepage memory must be contiguous.
