Newer versions of database provide new and improved features e.g from 10g onward, you have the automatic memory management features etc. 2. Oracle only provides security fixes and cpus for certian versions and patchset of the database.

Jun 26, 2013 · One interesting note: Oracle 9iR2, 10gR1, 10gR2, and 11gR1 all had a 5 year window from GA to Premier Desupport. Oracle 11gR2 for whatever reason has a 5 year, 4 month window. I’d welcome any theories on it. You can find the PDF with desupport dates at this link, or you can check out MOS note 161818.1.

NOTE: for Oracle Database 10.2, you should request 10.2.0.1 even if you want to install a later patch set. Once you install 10.2.0.1 you can then apply any 10.2 patch set. Similarly, for 11.1 request 11.1.0.6 which must be applied before installing 11.1.0.7. Patch sets can be downloaded from the Patches and Updates tab on My Oracle Support.
