Proper Smart Card support has been implemented in OpenVPN in the 2.1 branch by adding PKCS#11 support (I don't consider the cryptoapicert option, since it is Windows only), so on the client you need OpenVPN 2.1 at least (you can still keep your OpenVPN 2.0 on the server). Besides OpenVPN 2.1, you'll also need OpenSC.

Dec 20, 2018 · I replaced the openvpn binary in Viscosity with my binary compiled with pkcs11 support but I still have 2 problems: 1. on the connection I click Edit, Advanced tab, I can see the pkcs11-id line but it looks like this: "pkcs11-id my-long-long id" instead of this: "pkcs11-id 'my-long-long-id'".

Use the same config as that you originally reported to be not showing pkcs11 pin prompt through the GUI, but working from console. This test GUI works the same way as the released binary except for additional features including support for pkcs11 pin prompt. If your installed openvpn version is 2.3.x, start this GUI as admin (runas administrator).
