This is an EXTREMELY helpful patch for NFS:HS. It will get the game running perfectly on Windows XP, as long as you already have it installed. I guarantee that this is the best NFS4 support for XP, other than (maybe) the SP or EP. If anyone has trouble running a fresh install of NFS4 on XP, then I always recommend this file.

The perms problems come from Unix/NFS using much simpler ACEs than Windows. If you can live within the standard UGO/RWX, then you shouldn't have any problems. Side note: Win7 has NFS built in, but only in Enterprise and Ultimate versions; you can't add it on like XP. – Chris S Nov 22 '11 at 13:28
