Dec 19, 2004 · Dear All I have just installed pptp client on Mandrake 10.1 Official following the instruction given at pptp client's site. However, when I try to connect to a VPN server, I get the following message in the log: MPPE required, but kernel has no support.

Many options in the Linux kernel can be built either as loadable modules, or directly into the kernel image. This is selected during the kernel configuration step. In miguimon's case, the code for the CONFIGPPPMPPE option has been built into the kernel. (Had it been built as a module, you would have seen CONFIGPPPMPPE=m).

Whilst many older distributions (e.g. Fedora Cpre 3 and its predecessors) will never see an official 2.6.15 kernel release by their vendor, most future distributions will ship with MPPE support "out of the box", which will certainly simplify howto-writing :-) The complexity will come in supporting pptpconfig, at least until the port to python ...
