Jun 09, 2009 · I've recently been trying to boot some custom Darwin-based VM's under OS X. I'm running into a /highly/ annoying problem, however. When guestOS is set to "darwin", Fusion tries to automatically mount a file in" /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/isoimages" called "Darwin.iso".

Right-click the VMware Fusion application and select Show Package Contents. In the new window, go to Contents > Library > isoimages. Copy windows.iso to the desktop of the Mac. Navigate to Virtual Machine > CD/DVD > CD/DVD Settings. Ensure that Enable CD/DVD Drive option is set to ON. From the dropdown, select Choose a disc or disc image.

VMWare Fusion 3.0: Fusion 3.0 uses EFI instead of BIOS by default. After creating a new VM and before booting it from the install DVD/ISO, edit the *.vmx file and remove/comment out the firmware="efi" line. VMWare will then use the hacked boot image from darwin.iso.
