libmemcached(3) allows you to plug in your own callbacks function used by libsasl to perform SASL authentication. Please note that SASL requires the memcached binary protocol, and you have to specify the callbacks before you connect to the server.

OK so here is a way, it's obviously not the 'correct' way but SASL support in libmemcached seems somewhat bitrotted. Download libmemcached-1.0.8 (1.0.9 and later require code modifications sadly as SASL support hasn't been kept up-to-date with changes in the code).
