No, the Linux kernel could update the CPU microcode easily at the early stage of boot process, thou this type of update is volatile, i.e. lost after each shutdown. But it's fairly more simple than updating the BIOS or UEFI.

Jan 08, 2018 · that one is the right kernel. the patched kernels are available in all repositories for both PVE 4 and PVE 5. the kernel packages have two versions - one is the "ABI", which is 4.4.98-3-pve and part of the package name, and doesn't have to change for every update. the other is the package version, which is 4.4.98-102, and changes with every update.

Jan 12, 2018 · No; Microcode updates are usually tested for many months. But how can it then prevent “issues with Spectre and Meltdown”? I thought Spectre and Meltdown were only detected in 2018.

This enables the firmware-related mitigation to be applied on the host before the VMs are started. Therefore, the VMs are also updated when they're restarted. Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
