This is almost definitely caused by the underlying system not having FreeType installed (if FreeType is already installed then @user3338098's solution should fix it).. If you come across this problem absolutely do not follow the most upvoted answer (@nacholibre's). Either install the freetype library on your server (usually freetype, libfreetype or similar, will vary depending on distro.

The problem is that, if a client enables the built-in CAPTCHA in CUSTOMERS > Customer Configuration > CAPTCHA > Enable CAPTCHA on Frontend > Yes or Advanced > Admin > CAPTCHA > Enabled CAPTCHA in Admin > Yes, any page this is enabled for will crash that specific page.

May 16, 2008 · The image CAPTCHA provides a rather crappy default font, which is some built-in PHP bitmap font. Admin has to upload an ttf him/herself to make the image CAPTCHA acceptable. The reason to not include some ttf fonts with the image CAPTCHA package are licensing issues.

Jul 08, 2011 · On our D6 installation we have CAPTCHA 6.x-2.4 plus Captcha Riddler 6.x-1.1 and Image CAPTCH 6.X-2.4 (all from the same package I believe). All three are installed and enabled. Although we have used this module before with success on other sites, it is not working on this site which is a subdomain on our staging server.
