Because TLS 1.2 is a vital security feature, and because V6R1 support was ending a couple of months after the release of 8.5.0, it was decided to go ahead and remove support for V6R1 from 8.5.0.

May 31, 2017 · To be fair, IBM i 7.1 is the longest supported release of any IBM i midrange platform in the history of the AS/400 and its progeny, so IBM cannot be accused of cutting its life short. That said, as of April 30, 2018, you will need to upgrade off of 7.1 in order to maintain IBM support.
