There IS a listing for HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service, which other blogs have indicated might cause the problem, but that service seems to serve a useful purpose and i'd rather keep it. Right now the printer IS working, but it has dropped out of my printers list a couple of times.

I disabled one of the hp services that were running and so far it seemed to have worked. cant remember exactly which one but there were two running, one is not necessary and was causing the problem. figured this out with an hp tech.
