Nov 28, 2009 · The free radeon driver runs fine on my hardware with a >= 2.6.30 kernel, with full 2D acceleration (much better than fglrx), but of course it doesn't support 3D for now. And these cards dont support widescreen VESA framebuffer resolutions, but with KMS it should be possible in the future.

Note that the framebuffer works fine without the "ATI Radeon display support". Getting the X-server to work There are currently no ATI drivers for the Mobility Radeon 9700 card for the x86_64 ISA and one has to make use of the "radeon" driver that comes with the X11 distribution. This will only enable the 2D features of the card.
